Here is one account, pulled down from the many passed down through the ages. So what of the dark fairy, Maleficent? Why does she curse the innocent princess? What led to her becoming so filled with malice, anger, and hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. The two live happily ever after.Īnd yet this is only half the story. But the power of good endures, as her true love defeats the fire-breathing dragon and awakens the princess with true love’s first kiss. Though her three good fairies try to protect her, the princess succumbs to the curse. But always the maiden finds out that she is a princess-a princess who has been cursed by a dark fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and fall into an eternal sleep. The story has been told many times and in many ways. The tale is told as if it’s happening once upon a dream: the lovely maiden meets her handsome prince in the woods. I think the mystery element was maybe the challenge but once we established the world and the characters, it kinda pieced itself together quite easily.Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy It was the first genre I loved, and I know it like the back of my hand. Horror is such a different mode of writing for me than anything else.

Level: Realistically, this was less challenging than other projects. What were some of the challenges you faced when creating this story compared to previous work? Silk Hills is vastly different than some of the previous work you've all done.

Sherron: Always! I'm currently pitching around a couple of horror-blend books, plus Brian and I are always cooking up an idea or two for further down the road. I'm very blessed to have people giving me space to make such ugliness. I just launched a self-published horror-noir series called Saint Jane of the Orchard, as well as two other horror projects that I've got a green light on. With Silk Hills under your belts, are there more horror books in your futures? Those places all feel kinda like home to me. Even the Pigeon Forge Dollywood area has a little influence there.

Obviously, the Ohio/West Virginia/Kentucky/Tennessee towns that you may pass through or take up a cabin stay. We wanted to craft an "Anywhere" USA version of that part of the country. Level: Weirdly, lots of places in Appalachia are like where I grew up in northwest Ohio, just more beautiful. What were some of the real-world inspirations for Silk Hills, the town? As far as collaboration went, there were some conversations about aesthetics and general visual direction, but the boys basically handed off the reins once the script was finished, and I went on and ran with it.īefore choosing Mothman as the main focus of the story, were there any other cryptids you had on the drawing board? The story ticked all my creative boxes, and Brian and I got along swimmingly, so that was that. Sherron: Back in 2016, I'd been doing some small collaborations with Ryan when he introduced me to both the concept for Silk Hills and to Brian. As far as getting the band together, we were friends before this project, so it was easy to get it going. I think we briefly spoke about one or two scenes that I had some specificity on, but overall I think we wanted Kate to do Kate haha. After that, I went and did an alternate draft based on his script, and we talked about that, and then I added my take.

Ryan wanted the first crack at the script, though I think I wanted a few scenes because I'd imagined them very specifically. Level: I think we just trust each other to do what we do well! Regarding the writing, Ryan and I would talk it out. What is your collaborative process like? How did you begin working together? Related: Oni Press' Chef's Kiss Graphic Novel Review Sherron: I wish I could say I have some elaborate, hallucinogenic-centric process, but I just like drawing weird stuff and using weird colors. How challenging is it to get those ideas down on paper? The artwork here captures perfectly the psychedelic images that are at times nightmare-inducing. I just hope folks think they're neat! It was fun to try and suss out the Mothmen mechanics, and I tried to give the Deer Man the same life on the page as it has in the script, but I didn't go in trying to re-invent the wheel or anything.
